Song of the Day: Chechen ft. Carli - EPA

It’s been a while since I’ve found a great Swedish-language song, but this one definitely makes up for the lack of them as it’s brilliant and very original too! It’s indie-pop with dancey synths and quirky electro sounds and lyrics that I suspect don’t make any more sense to Swedes than they do to me. Surprisingly, Carli isn’t actually the singer (she is called Unni Håkansson) but produced the track along with the two main men behind Chechen, Frej Larsson and Linus Eklöw.

Song of the Day: Jess Mills - For My Sins

Jess Mills is a pretty unremarkable pop star, apart from the fact that her mum is politician Tessa Jowell - perhaps the most random celebrity connection ever! Although Jess seems to be just floating through her career, not ever making much of an impact, I do really like some of her songs and if you are a fan of Siobhan Donaghy you should check them out too. This new single sounds like a Siobhan-ed up version of Leona Lewis’ Better In Time!

Song of the Day: Molly Sandén - Unchained

Ever wondered what Kelly Clarkson would sound like with a Swedish accent and a hint of disco-pop? Well, wonder no more cos the new Molly Sandén single is here! Molly is most famous for being the ex-girlfriend of Swedish pop heartthrob Eric Saade and everything she has released since their split has been probably-not-coincidentally about a break-up. Unchained is her best single yet so I hope it’s the beginning of Molly turning into an exciting pop star herself.

Song of the Day: Wynter Gordon - Stimela

I’ve been so busy it’s taken me all week to get around to listening to this new song, which so many pop fans have been raving about, but it was definitely worth the wait! It doesn’t sound anything like the Wynter Gordon who made Dirty Talk and Buy My Love, but it’s just as good in a different way.

Song of the Day: The Dirty Heads ft. Matisyahu - Dance All Night

I discovered this yesterday on Hype Machine and had to share it, as it proves that every genre can create a mainstream pop hit once in a blue moon. The Dirty Heads are a reggae-rock group who I’d never heard of before, and Matisyahu is a rapper who was quite well known in the mid-’00s for being an orthodox Jew, although recent photos suggest he is no longer so strict in his religion. The chances of it really happening are small, but I do think this could be a big UK hit if it got the chance to be. Reggae-inspired pop is very in at the moment, and this fits the trend. It has a catchy, accessible sound, while still being quite different to anything else in the charts, which would give it a novelty appeal.

Song of the Day: Hermitude - Speak of the Devil

Australia has become one of the best countries for indie-pop of late, with artists such as Catcall and San Cisco on the cusp of success, and Gotye and Kimbra collaborating on one of 2012’s biggest hits. Hermitude are the next Aussie indie-poppers hoping for an international hit, and I could definitely imagine their single Speak of the Devil on Radio 1. Sure enough, Radio 1’s music policy executive Nigel Harding recently tweeted his approval of this track, so expect to see it rising up the playlist very soon! Make sure you check out the video as it’s very cool and won a Best Video award from Australia’s biggest indie radio station Triple J.
