Song of the Day: Jamie McDell - You'll Never Take...

Ever wondered what Taylor Swift would sound like if she was from New Zealand? No, me neither… but today I found out, and I quite liked it! Jamie was signed to EMI at age 16 and now 19 is finally releasing her debut single You’ll Never Take That Away, after building up a big fanbase online. The song is currently in the iTunes top 10 in New Zealand so hopefully it...

Song of the Day: Of Monsters and Men - Dirty Paws

I was very confused when I heard that Icelandic indie-poppers Of Monsters and Men, who were featured in this week’s Future Pop, were not releasing their online/US hit Little Talks as their first UK single. However, it all made sense when I heard the lovely song they are releasing instead. I’m already imagining an adorable video too.

Song of the Day: EBRU - Mad

Yesterday I announced that R&B singer EBRU will be performing at May’s This Must Be Pop Live, and it was a big day for her as she also had her official debut single Mad played on BBC 1Xtra in the evening. I hadn’t heard it when I invited EBRU to perform at TMBP Live, but I’m so glad I did now - this song is fantastic! It’s...

Song of the Day: Tone Damli ft. Eric Saade -...

Thanks to Scandipop for tipping us off about this ace new cross-Scandinavian duet. It’s the best things Tone’s done, in my opinion, and better than most of Eric’s somewhat disappointing last album. There hasn’t been that much exciting Scandipop since Melodifestivalen so it’s great to have something new to sing along to!

Song of the Day: Catcall - The World Is Ours
While Ladyhawke is disappointing us all with her underwhelming new music, another Australasian singer has come along to steal all her fans. The World Is Ours is described as a ’90s-inspired party jam on Catcall’s Facebook page, and it’s great fun, starting with a cheerleader-esque “1, 2, 3, you ready?” chant. I’m very excited about this...

Song of the Day: Hoodie Allen ft. Jhameel - No...
There are few things more exciting for me than when an artist in whom I saw great potential proves me correct, and in this song it happens twice! Hoodie Allen is an up-and-coming rapper/producer with a very commercial sound, but his previous work hasn’t really been pop enough for me. He has collaborated on this new single with Jhameel, a really cool and unique new pop...

Fab! Special (pop documentary) →
I love documentaries about flop pop acts (you can check out some of my faves here) and I discovered a very interesting one yesterday on YouTube. It’s about Fab!, an Irish girlband from the ’90s which included Tara Lynch, sister of Edele and Keavy from B*Witched and Shane from Boyzone. At the time the documentary was filmed, they’d already released their best song Turn Around but...

Song of the Day: Moa Lignell - When I Held Ya
Moa was a finalist on last year’s Idol in Sweden (the final series of Idol before X Factor arrives there this year) and she auditioned with her own very impressive original song. She released When I Held Ya in January and it peaked at no.4 in the charts, but only last month did it get a music video. Perhaps this means it’s going to be released outside of Sweden?...

Song of the Day: Mr Little Jeans - Runaway
I got really excited about Norwegian singer Mr Little Jeans when I first heard of her a couple of years ago and even listed her in my Next Big Thing A-Z of 2011, but she was pretty much silent for the entirety of 2011 so my prediction didn’t even have the chance to come true. Hopefully she’ll finally make it in 2012. I have to admit I don’t love Runaway as...

Song of the Day: Poppy and the Jezebels - Sign In,...
Indie-pop girlgroup Poppy and the Jezebels have released a few singles and EPs before, but it’s their new song Sign In, Dream On, Drop Out which has really got me interested, and not just ‘cos it was produced by Richard X. It reminds me of bands such as Bis and Helen Love who I loved in the early ’00s, so I’m excited to see this lo-fi fun electro-pop...
